Writing

Charles has published the poetry collections Sr Citizen (Amargord, 2011), Antípodas (Antipodes, Huerga y Fierro, 2016) and most recently La rebeldía del sol (Rebellious Sun, Olifante Ediciones de Poesía, 2022), which was inspired by the Antonio Machado Poetry Residency of Segovia and Soria he received in 2018.

His poetry and writing, as well as translations of other poets, have been included in anthologies in Spain and New Zealand, including Landfall, Poetry New Zealand Yearbook, Blackmail Press, Turia, Farol, Círculo de Poesía, Cordite Poetry Review, More of Us (Landing Press, 2019), Poetas de Otros Mundos (Poets of Other Worlds, Olifante, 2018), and Escribir con eñe (Writing with ñ, Olifante, 2023), and most recently Te Moana o Reo | Ocean of Languages (The Cuba Press, 2025) and Te Pūrere | The Exodus (Cold Hub Press, 2025). His poems have also been translated into Italian and Arabic.

He has created communities around poetry with the Spanish poetry project Palabras Prestadas in 2011, and, since 2016, the competition Given Words for Aotearoa New Zealand's National Poetry Day. He has edited six collections of winning poems from the Spanish project (Palabras Prestadas, Ediciones de la MediaNoche, 2013-2018) and is editing a collection of the first ten years of the Given Words project.

Following an invitation from Sarah Tremlett to write an article on poetry film in Portugal and Spain, which is published in The Poetics of Poetry Film (Intellect Books, 2021), he has also researched and published pieces on poetry film in Colombia and New Zealand.

The poems ‘Nominalism’ by Andrea Bernal, translated by Charles, won the ADELAIDE Literary Award 2019. He has also translated books by Ilia Galán and Lilián Pallares, including her collection of short stories Sleepwalking City – stories from the streets of Madrid, and poems from her collection Bestial in NEKE The New Zealand Journal of Translation Studies (Victoria University of Wellington, 2019). He has translated many New Zealand poets into Spanish, including the winning poems from the Given Words competition, published in the literary journal Trasdemar.
